Today my husband took me to a neighborhood pottery store to buy me some pots for the backyard iris garden that I have been refurbishing. This was to be my Anniversary present for our 39 years of marriage!
When we walked in we were taken aback at the sheer number of pots that were available. I don’t know if you’ve noticed – but garden pots of any kind are hard to come by these days. Most of them are sold out on Amazon, and only very unusual and expensive pots can be found. So it was a treat to be awash in garden pots. Granted, most of these pots were quite large, architectural statements for the garden, but it was so fun to browse.
However, as I turned a corner on the property and headed into the warehouse I was so surprised! There were outdoor garden fountains everywhere! There was loud water rushing, dolpins spouting, large burbling ceramic vessels, maidens pouring water into pools, and Buddhas with cascading water from the tops of their heads. So delightful!
There were some specific fountains that I wanted you to see.
There was this groovy 1970’s fountain; I’m sure I had poster like this on my wall when I was a teenager.
There was a new kind of fountain that looked liked thousands of small stacked rocks, with a water feature at the top.
There was this kitschy wishing well fountain, which I secretly loved, but which I knew Robert would think was hideous.
There were also what looked like natural stone fountains, with water flowing out of them into serene pools. And so much color – how fun to have a backyard with all of these bold color pots in hidden away places.
Robert and I seriously considered purchasing a fountain, (because why? I’m not sure) but that wasn’t why we were there – so we focused on our task of purchasing a couple of garden pots, and Robert pointed out the Talavera pottery that was stored atop all the fountains. That’s all he had to say. I love Talavera pottery, and I’m going to do a blog post about it soon, so if you have Talavera pottery in your yard – send me a picture!
We drove home very carefully with our two new charges, and placed them in their forever home. It was a successful trip, and exactly the kind of anniversary present that I wanted.
Today Robert and I will have been married 39 years. Thirty nine happy years. We were both English majors in college, so on the front of our wedding invitation was a quote from Robert Browning, “Grow old along with me, the best is yet to be.” Robert bought me a garden marker some years back in remembrance of that promise we made to each other. Those words were true then, and have remained true over our 39 years together. Happy Anniversary, buddy.
